Hey everyone!

I am back to you with another one of my blog posts! I saw this video about the dangers of a single story, and I thought I want to share this with you guys.

Was there someone in your life who you put them into a certain mold, only to discover that your assumptions were wrong and that there was more to this person than meets the eye? That’s exactly what Chimamanda Adichie, a Nigerian author, says in the video. She says that we tend to make assumptions about people based only on one side of the story, without ever hearing this person’s side of the story. This leads to people drawing false and misleading conclusions about others. I myself fell into this mistake previously. I had an English teacher who I respected a lot in school. He was very knowledgeable and we would have discussions about anything – religion, politics, history, whatever you can think of. I always assumed that he was brought up in a well-educated household. However, I later discovered that his mother was illiterate. Nonetheless, she sought to give him the best education possible. This really opened my eyes because I used to think that illiterate people were very narrow minded and cannot manage anything useful – harsh, I know. Therefore, it is important to not listen to one side of the story, and to always listen to the full side of the story before making conclusions about someone.

That’s it for today! Hope you enjoyed my mini-reflection on the video! Tell me in the comments about people you realized were wrong about because you only had a single story about them.
