This TED Talk was talking about a debatable question about “Does the language we speak shape the way we think?” and that was a new and interesting way for me when thinking about language. She gave a very interesting example about a group of people called Kuuk Thaayore who lived in Australia. What’s different about these people that they use cardinal directions generally not normal directions like we are used to. Simply, the way of saying “Hello” in their language is by saying which direction they are headed to using the cardinal direction method. The speaker made a very interesting activity in which she asked the audience to close their eyes and point out to southeast with their finger. When they opened, all had different directions pointed out while if you ask the same question to a 5 year old that belong to these people, he would get it in no time. Finally, this test shows the big difference in cognitive ability between languages.
