The TED Talk “How Language Shapes the Way We Think” made me realize how much power a person can gain by learning a new language. Language does not only enable communication; it expands one’s perspective and reshapes how we understand the world around us. By learning another language, we gain access to new ways of thinking, categorizing experiences, and interpreting reality. Even within the same language, differences in accents and dialects across regions can shape people’s mindsets differently, which may lead to misunderstandings or conflicts. These conflicts often arise not from intention, but from differences in how language has shaped judgment and perception. Therefore, the more languages a person learns, whether across countries or within the same one, the better they can understand others’ backgrounds and reasoning. This deeper understanding ultimately leads to greater wisdom and more effective, empathetic interaction with people.
