My Digital Pathway

Digital Test:

Knowing the Difference Between Digital Skills and Digital Literacies, and Teaching Both:

  1. The article was interesting. It reminded me of a fun activity we did in high school, where we altered the Wikipedia page about Alien to make it about one of our friends. (I’m not sure if they edited the actual website or just used the browser’s inspect tool.) The article also explores the distinction between digital skills and literacy. While it primarily focuses on teaching literacy, it addresses teaching digital skills to a lesser extent. This emphasis makes sense, as learning digital skills is much easier than learning literacy in today’s world.

Based on the results I obtained from the test and after reading the article, I would say I am more skilled in using digital tools than in possessing digital literacy. This realization surprised me, especially as a Computer Science student. I believe my main weakness stems from not using such tools extensively. This might explain why I am skilled but not literate. To improve, I need to focus more on understanding the “why” behind using these tools and practice pausing to reflect before taking action.

AI Pathway:

I chose to watch the course on prompt engineering. Fun fact: I was working with a teammate on a programming project, and an AI tool struggled to complete a simple task. My teammate mentioned he had taken a course on prompt engineering and tried to solve it but was also unsuccessful. Regardless, the course provided a great introduction to understanding how to use AI effectively.

I found the example of few-shot learning particularly interesting. Although I haven’t used it before, I realized that by giving an example of how a problem is solved using code, the AI might replicate a similar solution. I’m excited to try applying these concepts next semester.

Regarding fine-tuning, I expected more advanced technical details but then reminded myself that this is a prompt engineering course. Personally, I feel this course focused more on teaching a skill than digital literacy. For it to enhance literacy, I’d suggest including discussions on when and why to use AI, as well as scenarios where AI might fail. The course primarily emphasized how to maximize benefits from AI, making it more about skill acquisition than literacy development.

For the third model, I asked the ChatGPT 4-o model (can’t share chat because there were previous chats to it). AI got the answer to both questions right.

I prefer Poe’s web search functionality because it not only provides sources to support its conclusions but also demonstrates inference based on calculations. Statistically, it appears to be a more reliable AI tool compared to the Assistant, for example. The variance in errors is low, which is a significant positive attribute.

ChatGPT: tackle the growing carbon footprint of generative AI

I chose this article because I recently read about a new alternative to reduce the carbon footprint, and I wanted to explore what it would discuss. Although the article was short, it provided an opportunity for reflection. It made me think about air conditioning systems, which consume a significant amount of power. However, few people are willing to make sacrifices to reduce their usage.

This reminded me of a student example: someone so focused on getting grades that they fail to truly learn from their education. That’s why I strive to ensure my schooling never interferes with my learning—a sentiment perfectly captured by a quote from a friend’s Facebook bio: “Never let your schooling interfere with your learning.”

Digital Literacy goals:

  1. Learn about copyrights in AI.
  2. Learn about the usage of social media tools and how to integrate AI tools to get the most out of it.
  3. Understanding the strengths of AI tools in certain tasks.
  4. Understanding when the usage of AI might be considered as plagiarism.

Things I learned from the assignment

One Key thing I learned from the assignment was that I am not literate in using digital tools. However, I am skilled. I need to improve my digital literacy to strive in the digital world.
