q1) what stood out to me in Model employee’s was how the tracking device they introduced was shown as something helpful but was quickly turned into a tool to control others. that really shocked me especially the way it was delivered, as the employee was told they would get bonuses and help improve her work, but later the boss used it as a way to criticize her in every way possible, she got criticized for her speed, tiredness, sleep and even her personal life. Which makes you wonder as a listener as to what happened to the person’s personally boundaries, she was being constantly watched in a creepy and scarry way. This surprised me since it made me think what about the tools we use in our day to day life such as our phones, cars, smart watches, all of these gather information about us and are being stored somewhere, we don’t know where its going to.
Another interesting thing was when listening to Timnit Gebru he brought up a point i never considered, when marketing company use the Term AI we typically associate it as a technical tool such as ChatGPT and such, But here they use it as a way to sound more efficient and futuristic, and it goes to show that if a company words a certain technology in a certain way it can sound much more advanced then it really is, which is scarry to think about how easily influenced we are by words.
2. AI should not be taken at face value as a tool that automatically does tasks quickly and efficiently, there is a lot that goes into it, such as the abnormal cost to up-keep it, where are the resources coming from and how sustainable is it? also AI functions based off of Data, some individuals overshare everything to the AI not realizing that this data will be used to further enchance it, and we have no idea who has access to this data. In model employee the wearable device makes the workplace more stressful and controlled. in the podcast Timnit gebru explains how AI hype can hide problems like exploitation, costs and corporate power. and this heavily relates to our course since we are discussing AI literacy.
3. This video opened my eyes as it made me realize that i need to be more skeptical about the new technology i consume, i need to be wary of what i share and post about myself as this data could be used for deep fakes, or i could be affected from any major data leaks.
4. I think an interesting idea that was covered which fascinated me due to how scary it is but very likely to happen in the future is AI and workplace surveillance, The short video showcased how truly scary it can be, especially being constantly monitored especially outside of workhours, and its relevant since many workplaces are now adapting AI in every possible way so its not far that soon ai will even be used to closely monitor employees to ensure productivity and efficiency. And i believe that this is a topic that can get extremely dark quickly so it would be good to bring awarness to it.
