Reflecting on the article, I can see the difference between digital skills (knowing how to use tools) and digital literacies (understanding how to use them thoughtfully and creatively). It helps me understand what I’m good at and what I can improve.
My Strengths
- Communicate and Collaborate:
I’m confident in how I use digital tools to connect with others and share ideas. It’s not just about knowing how to use platforms—I’m good at using them to work with people and express myself clearly. - Teach and Learn:
I feel competent in using technology to learn new things and think deeply about what I’ve learned. I’m good at finding useful information and understanding it, which is important for digital literacy. - Find and Use Information:
I’m comfortable searching for information online and using it in the right way. This is a solid skill I rely on to get things done.
Where I Can Improve
- Tools and Technology:
I’m not very familiar with some digital tools. I need to get better at using them so I can be more confident and efficient. - Create and Innovate:
While I can create things using technology, I’m not always confident in being creative or trying new ideas. I want to feel more comfortable experimenting. - Identity and Wellbeing:
I’m comfortable with managing my online presence and staying balanced, but I could do more to ensure I’m using digital spaces in a way that feels meaningful and healthy.
My Goals
- Learn More Tools:
I plan to watch tutorials or take a course to learn tools I’m unfamiliar with, like spreadsheets or design software. This will make me more comfortable using technology. - Be More Creative:
I want to try creating new things, like blogs, videos, or graphics. Practicing creativity will help me grow in this area. - Balance My Digital Life:
I’ll think about how I present myself online and find ways to balance my time, like using mindfulness apps. This will help me stay healthy and positive. - Help Others:
I want to use my strengths in communication and collaboration to help others understand and use technology better.
By working on these goals, I can become more confident, creative, and thoughtful in how I use technology.
Step 3: (Taught path)
Disability 101: Awareness, Inclusion, and Equity
Disability is a deeply personal experience, shaped by so many factors—context, support, and even the use of assistive technology. What stood out to me most is how different each journey is, even for people with similar challenges. It’s eye-opening to think about how much support systems and inclusive attitudes can shift the focus from limitations to possibilities.
I also appreciated the discussion about language, especially the distinction between person-first and identity-first approaches. To me, it reinforces that we need to prioritize listening to how people define themselves, rather than assuming for them. Language is powerful, but it’s better to speak imperfectly with care than to avoid conversations entirely out of fear of saying the wrong thing.
Ultimately, it’s not just about what someone “suffers” or “overcomes.” It’s about recognizing their wholeness—their identity as students, colleagues, friends, and more. This reminds me how essential it is to approach everyone with respect and empathy.
