After weeks of creative brainstorming, feedback, and revisions, I’m thrilled to share the final version of my interactive game, Balancing Life as an Egyptian Student-Athlete. This immersive experience puts players in the shoes of a student-athlete navigating the unique challenges of juggling academics, sports, family expectations, and social commitments in Egypt.

How the Game Evolved
This game’s journey began with an exploration of digital narrative games. In Part 1, I played and reflected on several of these games, analyzing how they use interactive storytelling to evoke empathy and immerse players in diverse perspectives. You can read more about that experience in my blog post: “Wear My Shoes, and You’ll Understand”. These reflections deeply influenced the way I approached designing this game.
I wanted Balancing Life as an Egyptian Student-Athlete to be more than just a series of choices. It had to be emotionally engaging, culturally grounded, and reflective of the nuanced pressures student-athletes face in Egypt. Inspired by digital narrative games like Spent, I sought to create a game where every decision carried weight—forcing players to grapple with priorities, sacrifices, and their personal values.
Here’s how the game evolved, shaped by lessons from those earlier reflections and subsequent feedback:
1. Initial Concept
The first version of the game had a simple structure: 5 scenarios with 3 choices each. While functional, it lacked emotional engagement and specificity. The scenarios were generalized without reflecting the deeply rooted cultural and familial dynamics that are intrinsic to life in Egypt.
In my blog post, I discussed how digital games can evoke empathy by placing players in unfamiliar shoes. Inspired by that, I realized my game needed to give players a more authentic sense of what it’s like to balance Egyptian societal expectations alongside student-athlete commitments.
2. Cultural Context and Emotional Depth
To address this, I revised the scenarios to reflect the Egyptian context. This included decisions around:
- Family Gatherings: A significant aspect of Egyptian life, where family obligations can often conflict with personal ambitions.
- Financial Pressures: Highlighting challenges like transportation costs to training sessions or affording private tutoring for academics.
- Social Expectations: Capturing the tug of war between maintaining friendships and excelling in sports or academics.
ChatGPT played a crucial role here, offering ideas to integrate these themes. For example, one scenario involves a choice between attending a cousin’s engagement party, attending a sports practice critical for an upcoming match, or focusing on studying for an exam. The emotional stakes became clearer: do you prioritize familial harmony, your athletic dreams, or academic success?
3. Nuanced Choices
A major lesson I took from the feedback I got was that choices should be meaningful and nuanced. For this game, I made it clear which area—academics, sports, or social life—a player is prioritizing with each decision. For example:
- Rather than a vague “focus on one thing,” scenario 1 now asks players to decide between:
- Attending a crucial training session (sports priority).
- Participating in a group study session (academics priority).
- Meeting up with friends at a café (social life priority).
This specificity ensures that players feel the weight of their decisions and the trade-offs involved.
What I Would Do Differently with More Time
If I had more time, I’d:
- Incorporate Multimedia: Adding visuals, videos, or voiceovers could have enhanced immersion.
- Expand Interconnected Scenarios: While I aimed to connect some choices and outcomes, I didn’t fully implement dynamic consequences that ripple across scenarios. For example, skipping a family event to attend training could later affect familial support for sports, or consistent academic prioritization could cost players opportunities in athletics. This level of interconnectedness would add more depth and realism to the game.
- More Complex Consequences: Beyond the current setup, I’d expand long-term impacts. Skipping academics repeatedly might lead to academic probation or losing a scholarship, while excelling in sports could result in a national team opportunity.
- Feedback Systems: A scoring mechanism to reflect on priorities—e.g., “You balanced priorities well!” or “Your choices heavily favored sports at the cost of academics”—could enhance player reflection.
What I Learned While Making This Game
Creating Balancing Life as an Egyptian Student-Athlete taught me several valuable lessons:
- The Power of Storytelling: Digital narrative games can evoke empathy and provoke deep reflection. Designing this game reinforced the importance of relatable, emotionally engaging storytelling.
- Cultural Authenticity Matters: Tailoring scenarios to the Egyptian context made the game more meaningful. I learned how cultural specificity can transform a generic experience into something deeply resonant.
- AI Collaboration Has Pros and Cons: ChatGPT was instrumental in generating ideas, structuring scenarios, and suggesting emotional depth. However, as an AI tool, it sometimes lacked nuanced cultural understanding or emotional subtlety, requiring me to critically evaluate and refine its input.
- Interactivity Enhances Understanding: By asking players to make tough choices and experience the consequences, the game fosters empathy and self-reflection in ways traditional storytelling cannot.
Acknowledgments
I mostly used ChatGPT for making this game. It helped with brainstorming ideas and scenarios, and suggested ways to enhance my game. However, it was prompted by me first. It pushed me to think critically and creatively, shaping this game into a meaningful, immersive experience.
