Artificial intelligence doesn’t wait for the future to act. As a student of MICT (management of information and communication technology), I can already see how AI is revolutionising the subject. It facilitates the automation of data analysis, coding, information gathering, ERD drawing, large dashboards, and business operations. AI can assist me in understanding difficult assignments, deciphering code, gathering data, or navigating intricate projects for my academic work. But in the workplace, AI is, I believe, taking over to handle all the supply chain systems, all the ERP procedures, and all the coding without any human help. Soon, I think AI will take the whole process of data analytics and develop the whole systems to support business ideas.
AI is expected to play a major role in the management of information and communication technology (MICT). It can help automate routine tasks such as system monitoring, network management, and data backup, reducing the need for manual oversight. AI can also enhance cybersecurity by detecting threats and unusual patterns in real time. In data management, AI tools can improve decision-making by analysing large datasets quickly and accurately. Additionally, AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can enhance user support and communication efficiency. Overall, AI will make MICT systems smarter, more secure, and more efficient. I had the opportunity of interviewing Dr. Nahed Azab, a professor at MOIS, and found her to be very kind and helpful. I was interested to know what she thought of AI in the academic and professional spheres, and these are all the questions and the answers of the interview:
- How do you see AI currently being used in the field of technology and information systems?
“These days, developers can instruct any AI generator to create a script, program, or code; previously, this process took hours or days, but today AI completes the task in a matter of seconds. It aids in design and analysis as well. Additionally, AI is now integrated into everything that has to do with MICT because it facilitates their operations; this includes supply chain, ERP, and even analysis.”
- Do you use any AI tools in your teaching or academic research at AUC or in workplace?
“Of course, I frequently use chatgpt; for instance, when I teach computer science at the school, I usually post the code there and tell the student to view the error in the code rather than wasting time. The key here is to go over it again. We shouldn’t assume that the output is entirely accurate. Additionally, it assists me in research, editing papers and tests, and simplifying the methods I employ to instruct students.”
- What are some risks or concerns when using AI in academic or workplace settings?
“Sure, it isn’t always accurate; occasionally, it provides me with unreliable sources or misleading narratives while I’m conducting research, and other times, it’s also really shallow. My biggest worry, despite the fact that it is crucial, is that they discourage students from thinking critically or make them too lazy to think broadly.AI will only replace those who use it; it won’t replace humans themselves. Therefore, if we don’t realise that AI is merely a tool that helps us, people would rely entirely on it, which will limit their creativity and make everything seem the same, killing their ability to think critically.”
- Can you give an example of how a business is using AI to improve its operations?
“AI is used in many examples, such as RPAs, which replace human labour with IOT labour to reduce time waste and promote creativity. Additionally, some businesses fire some accountants rather than keeping many; they only retain a small number for outliers and other duties that aren’t part of their everyday responsibilities, leaving RPAs to handle the remainder of the work.AI is applied in every task and aspect of the company, such as supply chains, logistics, and business operations. Since businesses now use AI to respond to consumer enquiries, AI also aids in customer interactions.”
- What advice would you give students who want to specialize in AI or tech management?
“I suggest that students examine a variety of tools, stay informed about new innovations, and experiment with them without fear. Since AI is the future and we must adapt to it, using it is completely acceptable.Since every individual work now requires a different set of tools, they must be updated. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the various new tools that are currently available, but we also need to understand the output that each tool offers.”
- Do you believe AI can improve decision-making in organizations? How?
“AI can, of course, enhance decision-making.My ability to organise information and draw connections between various types of information will undoubtedly aid in my decision-making. There are also certain descriptive AI kinds that provide you with a solution based on past data and machine learning. I feed the system data about my business, and it makes a conclusion based on actual data, but I must obviously review it again after him.”
To learn more about this topic, I also did an interview with a professional in my industry. Here are his answers to the questions:
- How do you see AI currently being used in the field of technology and information systems?
“Artificial intelligence is becoming a foundational component in modern IT systems. We’re already witnessing its use in predictive analytics for infrastructure monitoring, anomaly detection in cybersecurity, and intelligent automation in service operations. In e& Egypt, AI is increasingly used in network optimization, customer experience management, and capacity planning. AI is assisting us to transition to proactive models of IT management.”
- Do you use any AI tools in your teaching or academic research at AUC or in workplace?
“Yes, we utilize AI technologies actively within our infrastructure research and operational planning at e& Egypt. As an example, we utilize machine learning algorithms to process system performance data and predict network demand by region. We utilize AI within our capacity planning models to simulate varied load cases and optimize resource allocation accordingly. Predictive analytics engines, anomaly detection tools, and intelligent automation platforms form an integral part of how we now manage and develop infrastructure. Such technologies enable us to make quicker, more precise decisions and address possible issues before they affect service.”
- What are some risks or concerns when using AI in academic or workplace settings?
“There are several critical concerns when it comes to implementing AI in the workplace. First is data quality and bias; if the training data is incomplete, outdated, or skewed, the AI’s recommendations can be misleading or discriminatory. Second is lack of transparency; numerous AI algorithms operate as black boxes, and it’s challenging to reverse-engineer decisions made by them. This causes accountability issues. Third, there’s the possibility of over-automation; whoever uses AI extensively can compromise human control of essential operations. Lastly, cybersecurity becomes a major issue, as AI systems can become targets for sophisticated attacks that exploit automated decision logic. This is why any AI initiative must be accompanied by robust governance, frequent audits, and explicit ethical guidelines.”
- Can you give an example of how a business is using AI to improve its operations?
“At e& Egypt, we use AI-driven analytics in network capacity planning. Through usage pattern analysis and load forecasting, we can dynamically scale infrastructure, minimizing outages and enhancing service continuity. Similarly, telecoms globally use AI for chatbot support, fraud detection, and churn prediction. Such uses have a direct impact on operational efficiency and customer retention.”
- What advice would you give students who want to specialize in AI or tech management?
“Develop both your technical and business sense. Master the basics of programming, data structures, and AI model building, as well as how those tools inform strategic decision making. Enrich your ability to take data analysis and turn it into practical business decisions. Above all, remain curious; the field is rapidly evolving, and you have to keep learning.”
- Do you believe AI can improve decision-making in organizations? How?
“Yes, without question. AI improves decision-making by giving you information-driven insights you may never see as a human, particularly in big, complicated environments. For example, capacity management decisions that previously required days to model can now be modeled in minutes with AI. It’s not about substituting human judgment, but about augmenting it with speed, precision, and predictive capability.”
Lastly, I don’t think any of the responses surprised me because AI is now taking over, so it makes perfect reason that academic teachers and even individuals in the workplace would take this for granted. However, we must use it appropriately. I believe we must strike a balance between both because we can rely on AI for tasks that are simple and time-consuming; however, we can perform the tasks that require a little accuracy ourselves to increase accuracy. We should also double-check everything that AI does, even for simple tasks, as it occasionally mentions or provides inaccurate information.
