Hey everyone!
We’re super excited to finally share our community service game , The Power of Small Actions, with you! The idea behind it is simple but powerful: we wanted to show how small acts of kindness can make a huge difference. Players get to step into the shoes of someone volunteering at an orphanage or a retirement home, and the choices they make shape both their experience and the impact they have on others. You can play the game here Game link.
How We Modified the Game Based on Feedback
When we first created the game, it was pretty basic. We used Google Forms and focused on just one volunteering experience—helping out at an orphanage. It was a good start, but after we got feedback from classmates and our instructor, we realized we needed to make some changes.
One of the biggest pieces of feedback was that we needed more pathways—our game had only one, and the rubric required us to include more than that. We also heard that the game needed to be more engaging visually, since Google Forms wasn’t exactly the most exciting platform.
So, we made some big improvements. First, we added a second volunteering pathway at a retirement home, which meant players could choose between two different types of service. Then, we moved the game over to Poe, a platform with better design options, and upgraded to the pro version to get access to even more features. That helped us make the game more interactive and visually appealing. We also added a reflection message at the end to give players a chance to think about their experience and what they’d learned from their choices.

What We Would Have Done Differently If We Had More Time
Looking back, if we had more time, there are definitely a few things we’d have loved to add. One idea was to allow players to choose their character’s gender and background, which would have made the game feel more personal and inclusive. We also thought about expanding the types of volunteer work, like adding environmental cleanups or working in animal shelters, so players could see that there are many different ways to give back to the community.
We also considered adding more reflection moments throughout the game, not just at the end. It would’ve been interesting to let players pause and think about their choices after each major decision, instead of waiting until the very end.
What We Learned While Making This Game
Working on this game taught us so much, not just about game design, but also about the value of community service itself. One of the biggest lessons was how important it is to listen to feedback and adjust our work based on what people need. We also learned that reflection is key—by giving players a chance to think about their actions, we could drive home the idea that volunteering isn’t just about fulfilling a requirement. It’s about making real connections and creating positive change.
Overall, this project reminded us how much we can learn and grow through community service. It’s not just about helping others—it’s also about personal growth and discovering the impact we can have. We hope this game encourages you to think about your own experiences with community service and how you can make a difference.
