Hey everyone! I’m back with another one of my blog posts. In this post, I’ll be talking to you about a TED video I came across. The video’s titled “How Languages Shape the Way We Think“. The speaker is called Lera Boroditsky and she is a cognitive scientist who studies languages – interesting right? I recommend that you guys watch it!

I wanted to share with you an interesting quote she made in the video:

“I will be speaking to you using language, because I can. This is one of these magical abilities that we humans have”

I think this is a really interesting quote because I believe that it is not only humans who can speak via language. I think what Boroditsky meant by language was the combination of both sound and words. However, I believe that the concept of language is something that not only humans can understand. For example, many scientists today have managed to teach monkeys and chimpanzees to communicate with them in sign language. One of the most famous examples is Koko the gorilla, who was able to communicate with people with sign language – credit. Therefore, I believe that animals are able to communicate with one another, we just do not know how they do. Think about it, when animals hear us speak, is the first thing they think of “Oooh these humans are speaking their own language?”. No, they do not understand what we are saying and we do not understand what they are saying or doing either. At least that is what I think.

That’s all for today guys. Let me know what you think! Is language really only unique to humans?
