King Richard (2021) tells the story of Richard Williams and his journey to the success of his daughters, Serena and Venus Williams. The movie follows Richard as he works to develop his daughters into professional tennis players while their family faces financial struggles, discrimination and adversity. It shows the sacrifices, hard work and determination behind their careers and how Richards belief in his daughter’s abilities and his persistence helped them pursue their goals despite the obstacles they were faced with. I related to the movie because as a student athlete, I face lots of adversity and obstacles such as injury, pressure, stress and poor performance. King Richard (2021) presents many valuable life lessons, strong characteristics and philosophies that are not only useful to achieve your career goals but also for living a fulfilled life. It emphasizes the journey and not the outcome which sends the message that when you’ve done everything you possibly can, success becomes inevitable. Something I love is the hunger, desperation and persistence Richard shows in the movie, he won’t leave till he gets what he’s looking for and I think this dedication is likely what lead to the extent of the success of his daughters. It reminds us that it’s not about the hardships you encounter but about how you work around those hardships to achieve your goals which is something I feel like I am good at doing. It also made me feel less alone in the struggles I experience as an athlete. It reminded me that other athletes face similar, if not worse, challenges everyday and in a way made Serena and Venus Williams appear more human because it proved that they struggle just as much as any other athlete.
