The film in which I saw a part of myself was Inside Out, I really felt connected with Riley and this was because she was trying to hide/ ignore her sadness and pretend that everything was very fine, even though she was facing difficulties or things that were troubling her. Sometimes, when I’m specifically stressed or upset, I do the same because I don’t always want other people to know how I’m feeling. This movie felt different from other animated movies I had seen as sadness was not presented as something bad that a character simply needed to overcome in order to become happy again. In Inside Out, I discovered the real value of sadness and learned that it is simply not necessary to be happy all the time. It made me reconsider my feelings and I also realized that it is okay to express my feelings and that doing so DOES NOT make me weak at all. After watching the movie, I have come to accept my feelings more instead of pretending they are not there. It helped me understand that even my uncomfortable feelings are basically a part of who I am.

I think that one of the movies I also thought of when we were given this assignment was also Inside Out. It did have a very powerful impact on me as a child since the message of sadness was very critical. I agree with what this blog post talks about in terms of how it is okay to be sad and I also loved how the movie shows how we are meant to be full of different emotions and it also represents how they may clash together which truly does happen in real life. Which scene in the movie was the most that stuck with you?
When we were given this assignment I also thought of using Inside out as it provides depth on emotions especially at a young age. When I watched this movie when I was younger it opened my eyes to the idea that its okay not to be okay and that sadness is an emotion that we are allowed to feel and express just as you said. I also think it shows how we are made up of more than one thing and so not always feeling the same and thinking the same is normal. What is the scene that impacted you most?
I totally agree with you about hiding your sadness as sometimes it’s easier to pretend everything is fine rather than explaining what you’re feeling. I also enjoyed learning that sadness is not always a negative emotion and that it can help us to better understand ourselves. I was reminded today, by my reflection, that it is not weak to show emotions. Have you found this film has helped you to be more open towards others if you are feeling upset?
I really liked your point about how sadness is often portrayed as something that we need to overcome rather than allow ourselves to feel the emotion. This supports how society creates a single story around happiness where being happy is seen as a sign of strength and being sad as a sign of weakness. I also like how inside out challenges this idea by showing that sadness is as important as joy and that expressing our emotions can actually help us connect with others.
I personally agree with what Nancy’s said! I feel like we shouldn’t hide our emotions because they can build up and when that happens, it could be difficult to control them. Sharing your emotions will help you understand why you’re experiencing them, and it can actually feel like a weight has been lifted off your chest, especially if the person you’re talking to relates to what you’re feeling. I also think that the movie is a good reminder to always be kind because you never know what a person is going through.
