In the video, “A Model Employee”, I learned that the unethical behaviors that we do, it does not only affect us but also can negatively affect the people we love. Before watching this video, I always looked at the situation from my own side; I always knew that our unethical or illegal behaviors affect our lives and can cause major troubles more than what we imagine, and I did not think about any other consequences. I always believed that our choices belong only to us. Nevertheless, through this video, I understood that our behavior can destroy someone’s life. Our choices do not always belong only to us; we should always consider the other consequences that can harm someone else. This video changed how I think about ethics. It made me realize that responsibility is not only for our benefit, but also for others and for the people we love.

In the podcast, “Don’t Fall for the AI Hype”, Gebru discussed that AI is a broad term and a marketing tool rather than a precise scientific concept. The media now use terms like AI, ML, and deep learning, which are misleading. Those terms make people unconsciously think that the AI is competing with the human mind, while it is not. I was shocked knowing this fact because I was one of the people who thought that AI could think better than humans, and could replace humans in the future. To be honest, what Gebru said sounds realistic. Everyone who uses AI tools, like ChatGPT, will notice that AI is stupid and cannot think like humans. You always need to be very specific while giving the AI tool instructions to give you what you asked for. However, it usually hallucinates, even though you are using a paid subscription. After hearing this podcast, I realized that AI tools do not understand the information the way humans do, even if they sound convincing; therefore, I learned that human support will always be needed and cannot be replaced.

I heard multiple times that AI tools are biased because of the companies that made them; however, I did not realize how serious the problem is before hearing the “Don’t Fall for the AI Hype” podcast. In the podcast, Gebru explained how the AI could not recognize black people in an image and classify them as gorillas. This story reminds me of a similar situation that I experienced with the AI when I uploaded a photo of mine to generate a cartoon photo, and surprisingly, the AI tool did not recognize my Hijab. The generated photo represented my hijab as a hoodie cap. At that time, I was mad, but I did not think much about the situation. But now, I understand that the AI tool discriminates against some groups of people because it is trained on societal data that is full of inequality. And as Gebru said, companies take advantage by putting the blame on AI, acting as if the AI is making decisions independently, while it is not. That shows the hidden danger of relying too much on AI tools without knowing who generated them and how they are generated.

Through the video, “A Model Employee”, I learned that our unethical behavior can negatively affect the people we love. As a result, people can lose trust in us. That is like what I learned from the “Co-Design Session on Ethical AI Use by Faculty and Students” as part of the course. During this session, my group took a scenario to analyze; it was talking about a professor who was unexpectedly assigned to teach an unfamiliar course outside his specialization, with only one day to prepare, so he used an AI tool to quickly generate a syllabus from the course description. Through analyzing this scenario, my group and I concluded that the unethical use of AI can lead students to be disappointed in their professor and lose trust in him. By analyzing both materials, I concluded that unethical decisions, including the use of AI, can harm relationships between people, damage trust, and negatively affect those who depend on us. Therefore, honesty is part of our responsibility in our personal and professional lives.

After watching the video “A Model Employee”, I learned to think about every action before doing it because any illegal action can harm me and the people I love. For me, I am a person who does not like breaking the rules and always tries to do what I am asked to. I do not like taking risks, and I always make sure not to disappoint those who trusted me. Furthermore, I always try to bear the consequences of my actions myself while making sure that no one will be affected. Therefore, if I were in the same situation as the girl in the video, I would either choose to follow the rules of my job or quit the job if it did not match my lifestyle. Most probably, I would follow the rules and wear the watch all the time to get a bonus. And if I get exhausted from it, I will take it off after working hours and lose the bonus. In the video, the girl was trying to wear the watch all the time to get a bonus, but at the same time, she cheated on the system to take extra money that she did not deserve. If I were her, I would never do that because that is considered stealing.

I suggest including course content that explains how AI actually works. In the podcast, “Don’t Fall for the AI Hype”, Gebru discussed that the AI is not actually as smart as we think. Companies and researchers only created hype around it by using the name “Artificial intelligence,” making us think it could think like humans and might even be better, but it is not. Therefore, I became curious to understand more about how AI actually works. Gebru mentioned in the podcast some of the AI limitations; however, I still do not understand why she said that it is not as smart as we think. Through this course, I interviewed some of my professors, and they told me about excellent AI applications in the oil and gas industry, and they showed me how it can be very useful, with all its limitations. I know that the AI still has limitations and racism; however, I still do not think that it is overrated. Therefore, I think including “How AI Works” content in the course would be helpful.
