This course taught me that identification, bias, and othering all have a significant impact on how we perceive the world.Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s The Danger of a Single Story, which demonstrated how relying entirely on one viewpoint can lead to stereotypes, was one of the most influential themes. I also learned that bias is frequently unconscious and influenced by our circumstances, and that equity varies from equality in that it promotes justice based on particular needs. As a result of this training, I became more self-aware, understanding that my upbringing influences how I think and that I occasionally make impulsive decisions without adequate knowledge. It also made me question how I present myself to others and whether I am truly open-minded. I learnt that being a global citizen requires understanding others rather than simply defending one’s own beliefs, and that empathy, respect, and active listening are essential when engaging with others. I still wish to improve my dispute resolution skills, especially when dealing with sensitive issues. I believe that discussions in Soliya may become heated if themes such as Palestine or regional issues arise; so, I would try to keep the discourse respectful and focused on understanding rather than disagreement. In summary, I believe that the Soliya experience would strengthen my self-awareness, reduce my prejudices, and improve my capacity to engage with people from various backgrounds.
