In this interactive story-driven game, players take on the role of Layla, a young Muslim woman managing daily life in a country where Islam is frequently misunderstood. By making a range of choices—both minor and deeply personal—players encounter the subtle and direct challenges that visibly Muslim individuals often face in Western cultures.
This game is meant to open your eyes to the problems that people face and the battles they fight in secret without others being aware. The game features a wide variety of choices, often with very severe consequences and challenges that require some thinking and difficult decision making.
Since my first draft, I have added many more scenarios and tried to add a bit more emotion to the game. I also decided to make it so that it’s more difficult for your game to end too early so although you will suffer the consequence of a bad decision, you can still continue the game.
If I had more time I feel like I would have made the games timeline into an entire week instead of two days as I had so many examples and ideas of what “Layla” could face due to personal experience but I couldn’t cram them all into the game.
I did my own research for this game by talking to my own mother and sisters about their experience being Muslims in a westernized country. I also had my own experience (although it wasn’t as severe) and I decided to include some of them as well.
I learned a lot about the true depths of the struggle people like my mother had to go through simply because of the way she chooses to dress and her faith. I really hope we can raise more awareness and educate people about the effects of prejudice and racism even when they are hidden.
This is my game and I hope you like it 🙂
