- This course taught me a variety of things. Reflecting back, I realized that I am a very analytical person. I lacked a lot in emotional understanding including understanding my own emotions. I noticed that during play the games like the board games that would be at the beginning of each session. My answers during those games would always be very surface level. This was further reinforced by my ALTCV, which turned out to be very technical. This was later highlighted further in my discussion concerning Equity vs Equality. I debated this topic regularly, because I found it worth discussing. However, all my arguments had always stemmed from logic and reasoning rather than attempting to understand people’s hardships. I noticed that matter during the activity in class, where I was blindfolded and asked to attempt to deal with the rest of the class without extra help as though I was a normal student. I also discussed this topic during my Soliya program and one of its assignments. In Soliya, we were tasked to raise a topic we felt strongly about with a few of the session mates and my topic was the Equity vs Equality topic. Later on there was an assignment where we had to discuss a topic with community members. I have a new found understanding to the matter. I believe that equity by the definition of helping everyone be given what they need so as to have an equal opportunity as everyone else is the right approach. An equal outcome isn’t necessarily the preferred outcome, however ensuring everyone has the same opportunity is important. To provide equal opportunity, it may be necessary to give unequal resources in interest of giving equal starting grounds. This may mean helping the disadvantaged to start on the right footing.Besides that topic, a point concerning my social interaction had been raised to me multiple times. I enjoy discussing almost any topic. In particular, I enjoy listening to the various perspectives people have. A common point that I was told during this course was that I may be taking up other people’s time. This idea was further realized during Soliya. In one of the activities, we each had a topic of our own to discuss. We broke out into breakout rooms where we discussed our topics. In my group we ended up discussing my topic more than the others. Overall, I came to the conclusion that I may be unintentionally taking over others’ voices. As such, I decided to hold back in conversations and ask more questions to urge people to speak their mind.
The final main thing I learned during this course would be how I changed my view on my parents to a certain extent. While making my game “Tiger Parents”, I mainly believed that my parents were too strict while I was growing up. And I still believe they were, however I came to better understand that they were simply doing what they thought was right. In my game, I designed the first four scenarios based on my experience with my parents. Then I designed the four after which based on my brother’s experience with my parents. However, the last two scenarios were ones where I imagined myself to be a parent myself and in need to make tough decisions for my child. One of the great quotes I came across while researching for my game was by Oscar Wilde where he said, “Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them.” And I believe that one day I’ll have to walk in my parent’s shoes, fail to make a decision that my child agrees with, they will judge me for it, and hopefully eventually forgive me for it.
- I would mainly show them my Narrative Game. In this activity, we would each make a narrative based game, where the player has to go through different stories via scenarios. And in each scenario, the player would have to make a decision through the choices listed and face the consequences of their choice. My game topic was “Tiger Parent”, and overall the activity for me was one of my great learning points. It wasn’t an easy task, yet greatly enjoyable. My other main learning points would be in my reflections. However, to show them some of the enjoyable activities that summarize the essence of this course, I would also show them ALTCV, and my AI Professional Interviews. The ALTCV helps better understand oneself and what one prioritizes. In that activity, we would create an alternate CV that summarizes things we are proud of, but may not commonly appear on a normal CV. The AI interviews were another very interesting activity that touches on the major topic of AI in this course. During this activity, we would interview professors and professionals from our respective major and question them on the use of AI in our respective fields. As a Computer Science major I found the answers rather interesting, each of the professor and professional had slightly different perspectives. where it was the professor that was more open and interested in exploring the use of AI in education, while the professional held back in the usage of AI in their daily work.
- I believe that the course was mainly well structured. I think many of the activities we did were worthwhile, and the professor even adapted activities with time to accommodate the needs of the students. For instance, the blindfolded activity wasn’t at first planned. However later on the professor had it when she found the need for it so as to raise awareness of the matter. On the other hand, some of the activities like the board games that we had across many days at the beginning weren’t as useful for me. I am not sure how to make it better, but perhaps clarifying the games by example one where the depth of the game is shown can help. For me, I just found those games to be a bit surface level and not greatly beneficial. As for the AI topic, I believe there were few matters to change. We discussed AI a lot, and viewed many examples. We had plenty of assignments where we were given the chance to use it. However, I believe discussing the topics related to prompt engineering as well as trying live examples to see the value in those methods may have been helpful. Besides the skill of using AI, I think further debating how AI should be used in other courses may be also useful. We discussed it slightly when we filled out the sheet of our experiences with professors that discussed the use of AI. However, I think it could be even more useful if we discussed the right and wrong way that AI should be used in both educational and professional environments. The interviews we had discussed that matter, however I realized that most professors and professionals simply don’t know the right answer to the matter. Perhaps that is because they haven’t thought of it enough, so maybe this course can further discuss it so as to be a gateway into the matter?
- I think this course touches on aspects of identity, and AI. As such I believe that the course in terms of AI is perhaps more beneficial to people who lack much knowledge of such technology and would as such benefit to learn to use it in their everyday life. As for the identity part, I believe everyone can benefit from it in various ways. The course covers identity in a variety of ways, so that every person may have something to learn about themselves through this course.
