The purpose of the Privilege Walk exercise is to help students in identifying and considering the different kinds of privilege and disadvantage that they might face depending on their identities and personal experiences. What I understood that it aims to bring awareness to how different social factors impact individuals’ lives, shaping their opportunities and challenges My classmates align themselves in a straight line while the professor reads questions. For example, “take a step forward if your parents have a college degree” or “take a step back if you have ever felt unsafe because of your race.”They were also grouped according to different characteristic such as, religion, wearing hijab or not, social classes , etc… Everyone walk forward or backward in response to the questions, showing how privilege and disadvantage differ amongst people in general.

note: All the class participants in this game had different identities that was assigned by the professor.

Martina’s experience : This activity taught her to be more grateful. She realized that there are always those who face more difficulties and disadvantages than she does, even though she faces difficulties as a Christian woman living in Egypt. She was motivated to think carefully about a number of aspects of her life by this emotionally powerful exercise. It left her with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for her own circumstances and the environment she lives in.This experience reminded her of the importance of empathy and the power of perspective in understanding others’ struggles.
Nabila’s experience: In the activity she found herself frequently stepping back during the exercise. Her reflection was that if she was rich she could have stepped forward and change her status in the society. However, by the end of the activity, she felt relieved and happy, appreciating the chance to reflect on her life and recognize her strengths and opportunities that she was luckily born in.
